On a picture perfect day, 52 teams gathered at Central Park in Hopkins for our 7th annual Wifflin’ for Wishes event. I am happy to say that this year’s event raised just over $5,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of MN (the actual figure will be known in the coming days)! This is outstanding!
Also returning to the fray were the sports departments from Fox 9 and Kare 11 who gave us a very enteraining sequel to last year’s exhibition wiffle grudge match. A crucial error by Fox 9 in extras gave Kare 11 a 2-1 win and some sweet, sweet revenge.
This year’s tournament was won by Team Reptar, a crew of young guys, who blazed through 5 games in the playoff rounds, defeating Big Bunyan in the final game to win the title. Bunyan also carried home hardware for Best Uniforms and Best Team Name! Last year’s champs, Fridley Factors, made a respectable run to try and defend their title, nabbing a semifinal trophy, along with The Gamblers.
Other fun throughout the day was the live musical stylings of local bands Battlefish and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, as well as our first ever Home Run Derby, in which the winner took home a sweet pot of over $130!
I want to thank all of the people who worked so hard to pull this thing off. It’s a Herculean task to get this event up and running, and there are many folks who pitched in on this day to make this thing work. Your help is so invaluable, I can’t thank you all enough!!
I really hope you enjoyed this year’s installment, and I look forward to making this even bigger and better for next summer!
